Pennsylvania is suffering a critical nursing shortage but help may be on the way. Starting on Tuesday, the multistate Nurse Licensure Compact will take effect in our state, as we join forty other states in allowing nurses with multistate licenses to practice in the Commonwealth. It will be a boon for hospitals and medical agencies which use nurses.
The compact covers both registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. A survey by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania in November of last year showed the state with a 30 percent vacancy rate in nursing positions, and a separate survey in January forecast a 20,000-nurse shortage by 2026.
