The Pennsylvania Senate is returning to session today to iron out some of the final details of the 2023-24 state budget.
While the $45.5 billion spending plan was signed by Governor Josh Shapiro on August 3rd, over a month after the June 30th deadline, the senate did not sign off yet on the necessary budget implementation legislation. Shapiro’s approval of the spending plan released state funding for public schools, county human service agencies and other programs. When the fiscal code is passed, funding will be made available for several programs, including school mental health grants, funding for public defenders, rate increases for emergency medical services, relief for hospitals and others.
In a statement, President Pro Tempore Kim Ward from Westmoreland County said that funding for emergency medical services and hospital and health system relief will be on today’s agenda.
No word yet if the state house will have an early session. They are due back on September 26th.
