IUP kicked off the academic year this morning with a special program at Fisher Auditorium.
IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said that IUP is seeing the same problems that a lot of other universities across the country are seeing, and while rumors of merging with other schools or closing altogether are not true, there were some dark clouds overhead. But he also mentioned that this was similar to what IUP was going through after World War One, when it was Indiana State Normal School and the university came back from adversity.
He also put forth the five prongs of a plan to bring the university back to solid ground, which were to keep every student who comes to IUP, grow market share in traditional markets, educate other student groups, grow IUP’s reputation in education and seek out alternative revenue streams to support the work they do. He said the reason he was so optimistic about IUP’s future is because of the people that make up the university.
The ceremony was capped by the double-in-size IUP Marching Band performing Amazing Grace and the IUP Fight song, continuing a theme set last year of coming together for the challenges to come.
Classes at IUP start Monday.
