Looking to get Pennsylvania one step closer to passing a budget, the state Senate approved a pivotal resolution geared towards school funding Thursday afternoon in Harrisburg.
The Senate voted to approve House Bill 611, which provides necessary funding for schools, counties, and other organizations for the 2023-24 fiscal year. Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward projected the bill’s passage would complete 75 percent of the budget, but Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman said it’s roughly around 98 percent complete and that the passage of House Bill 611 was a quote, “significant spending piece of the Commonwealth.”
Governor Shapiro indicated that he would use a line item veto to cross out a school voucher program once a budget is in place, but Pittman said Shapiro reaffirmed his commitment to “empower parents when making decisions for their children’s education.”
The next scheduled session is Monday, September 18, but Pittman said there is an option for the Senate to return sooner to complete the budget.
We’ll hear from Senator Pittman Friday morning on Indiana in the Morning.
