Opera superstar and Indiana County Native Renee Fleming and her charitable foundation along with two other institutions have established a new award for building the field of NeuroArts, which is the study of how arts and aesthetic experiences change the brain and body, and how that can be used to improve someone’s health and well-being.
According to a news release from the Aspen Institute, they along with the NeuroArts Blueprint Initiative have now established the Renee Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards. The three purposes of the award are to provide seed funding for young scholars in the arts and sciences to work collaboratively on research, identify and fill key gaps in neuroarts research, and develop and sustain a new generation of professionals in this field.
The area has been a field of interest for the award-winning operatic soprano. She says she hopes the awards will “foster inquiry and partnership between young scientists and artists, nurturing the imaginative spirit and the potential of the neuroarts field.”
The Renée Fleming NeuroArts Investigator Awards Program will be housed at the Aspen Institute. As a leading advocate for research spanning arts, health, and neuroscience, Fleming launched the first ongoing collaboration between The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Institute of Health, and she has presented her program Music and Mind around the world.
