State Representative Jim Struzzi has announced that the house has passed a bill that would allow teacher hiring practices that were put in place during the Covid-19 Pandemic to continue.
House Bill 27 would make the provisions from Act 27 that expired at the end of this school year and make them permanent. Those provisions gave schools flexibility regarding the shortage of day-to-day substitute teachers by employing annuitants, prospective teachers and graduates of educator prep programs as substitutes. Struzzi’s bill also includes safeguards to limit the number of days student teachers would be allowed to serve in that capacity and not take away from their supervised student teaching experience. It also expands opportunities for individuals who have temporary teaching and substitute teaching permits, in addition to anyone who serves as a classroom monitor.
The bill is now headed to the senate.
