The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has once again issued a statewide Code Red Air Quality Action Alert, which will remain in effect until midnight tonight.
According to a news release from the DEP, the alert is once again connected with the wildfires in Eastern Canada. While the average air quality index readings for the entire day would likely be in the Code Red range, some areas of the state could be in a Code Purple status. During a Code Red alert, vulnerable populations like the very young, the elderly, and those with respiratory or cardiac problems should avoid outdoor activities and everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
Residents and businesses are also being asked by the DEP to not openly burn leaves, trash or other items and not to use gas-powered lawn and garden equipment in an effort to further reduce air pollution.
Accuweather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said that this could continue into tomorrow, but it may clear out by the weekend and be replaced with some rain showers.
