We are entering the final week of June and there is still no state budget in place.
Very few expect that there will be one ready to go when the new fiscal year begins on July 1st, as the debate over spending continues in a divided General Assembly. The House passed a budget along party lines, with the Democratic majority holding the power. But in the Senate, Republicans are in control and they are not interested in a House-passed budget that spends about a billion dollars more than Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro proposed.
Senator Joe Pittman, the Republican Senate Majority Leader, said last week that even the governor’s proposal was “an impossible number” – and the House budget spends even more – but compared to former Governor Tom Wolf, Pittman says Shapiro is “very responsible.” He said he does not expect a budget impasse to last all summer.
