Citing the rapidly growing teacher shortage, Pennsylvania lawmakers are acting by offering incentives to student-teachers while in the classroom.
House Bill 1331 was passed yesterday by a 141-62 vote. The bill seeks to remove barriers from student teachers by allowing them to earn payment while teaching. They could earn a minimum grant of $10,000, but could also receive an additional $5,000 if they work in schools that attract few student teachers or have a high number of open positions.
Grant recipients would also agree to work as a teacher in Pennsylvania for a minimum of three years.
State Representative Jim Struzzi voted in favor of the bill, while Brian Smith voted against it. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
