An opera superstar and Indiana native has received yet another honor, this time it will celebrate a lifetime of work.
The Kennedy Center announced today that Renee Fleming will be a part of the 2023 class of the Kennedy Center Honors. The awards are given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime contributions to American culture. Fleming has been honored for her work in bringing opera to the masses. Nicknamed “The People’s Diva”, she has sung for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the diamond jubilee for Queen Elizabeth II and at Super Bowl XLVII. She has received five Grammy awards, including an award earlier this year for best solo classical album for “Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene.” She has also become an advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience.
She will be joined in the 2023 Kennedy Center Honors Class by Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, comedian Billy Crystal, singer Dionne Warwick and rapper/actress Queen Latifah. The awards ceremony will be broadcast in early December.
