Today is the national celebration of Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is celebrated today as it commemorates the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for the enslaved people in Texas on June 19th, 1865.
As today is a federal and state holiday, there are some closures in effect. Federal and state offices are closed for today. There will be no regular mail delivery today and US Post offices are closed. Many banks are also closed for the days as well.
The Indiana County NAACP (N-double-A-C-P) will hold its annual Juneteenth celebration at Mack Park this afternoon and evening. The celebration will start at 2:00 with free swimming at Mack Park Pool. The celebration will continue through the day with special guests, dancing, food and other activities. Also during the celebration will be a bench dedication ceremony for Sandra K. Williams, a longtime member of the NAACP and a person who was a key organizer of the Juneteenth celebrations in the past.
The celebration is free, but they are asking people to log on to to the event’s Eventbrite page and register.
