After granting an eighth continuance in the trial of Ray Shetler Jr. last week, Westmoreland County Judge Meaghan Bilik-DeFazio has not set a new date for the trial to get underway. It’s been over a year since Shetler was first scheduled for trial and 18 months since he was charged. Despite his demand last June that the case move forward, a series of motions for continuance have been executed by both the prosecution and defense since.
The 38-year-old Shetler is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and single counts of resisting arrest and attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer after he was found hiding in his girlfriend’s mobile home outside of Seward. He’d skipped a probation hearing and when police and sheriff’s deputies caught up to him, he brawled with them and injured one seriously while suffering injuries himself.
