State environmental officials are keeping a close eye on the air quality across Pennsylvania as much of the state is under an air quality alert for the rest of the day.
While Indiana County was excluded, Armstrong and Westmoreland Counties are part of a group of 20 counties under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection today. A Code Orange alert means that air pollution concentrations in the Pittsburgh region may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and people that suffer from lung and heart diseases. Accuweather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said that much of the pollution is coming from the wildfires in Canada, and while Indiana County is not in a Code Orange area, there should still be some concern.
The alert will end at 4:00 this afternoon, but Lundberg says that the air quality issues could continue over the next few days.
The negative effects of the higher concentrations of air pollution can be minimized by limiting outdoor exercise or strenuous activity, or wearing a mask if you are in that sensitive population and have to be outside.
