The state House last week passed a bill aimed towards allowing loved ones or law enforcement officials to request a courtroom hearing that would temporarily disarm someone with mental health issues. One local representative expressed opposition to this bill.
In his recent newsletter, State Representative Jim Struzzi opposed House Bill 1018 that was passed on Monday. The Bill prohibits people with mental health issues to possess, use, manufacture, control, sell or transfer firearms and would force courts to implement risk protection orders.
While Struzzi called the Bill “admirable” in the newsletter, he said there are mechanisms already in place for these types of cases.
House Bill 1018 now heads to the Senate for consideration.
