Blairsville Borough Police are alerting residents of a phone scam making its way through the county.
Officers say they received several complaints that someone with a foreign accent made calls to residents identifying themselves as a member of the department and told them that there is a warrant out for their arrest, and the only way to compensate for the warrant is to either pay a fine or turn themselves in. Officers were also informed that the caller I.D. showed the Blairsville Borough Police Department’s phone number, but recipients knew immediately it was a scam and hung up the phone.
Residents are reminded that Blairsville Borough Police, or any law enforcement agencies, do not collect payments over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, you’re asked to hang up and report it to a local police department.
