The Blairsville Underground Railroad group has received a top honor from the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation office.
The group was recently honored with the office’s 2022 Community Initiative Award. The award recognizes the hard work and dedication of local groups in preserving history with the statewide preservation plan. It provides a framework of activities and goals that will help state residents better understand historic preservation and its benefits, appreciate their shared histories as told through historic places, and balance history and economic development to manage change within their communities. The BVUGRR was one of four entities to receive this honor for 2022.
The group was recognized for preserving the history of the underground railroad. The volunteer group joined the statewide colloquium of UGRR groups in 2006. Since then, the group has converted the former Second Baptist Church into their history center, held walking tours and living history events and other events.
