Another scam designed to get your personal information is making the rounds on social media and is using a morbid way to get your attention.
The scam starts with an instant message from a person on Facebook that usually says something like: “Look who died in an accident. I think you know him. So sorry.” The message is followed by a few crying emoji’s and a link that looks like it would lead to a story. The problem is that the link does not, and it might send you to a page asking you to log into Facebook again. In that case, you are giving your personal information to a scammer.
Those behind the fraud are playing on people’s emotions, with people seeing the message going into a brief panic and clicking the link without thinking. One of the worst parts of that is that the message will come from someone on your Friends list.
If this happens, do not click the link and check with your friend outside of social media to let them know they have been hacked.
