The Pirates’ losing streak is at four after a sweep in Tampa Bay. Joe Block recaps yesterday’s game.
Using his sweeping curveball, Pirates reliever Colin Holderman threw the Majors’ first immaculate inning of the year in the 7th. He struck out the side on just nine pitches. It was the fourth immaculate inning in Pirates history.
Vince Velasquez said after the game that he felt pain in his elbow after throwing a slider in the third inning and he lost velocity as the inning wore on. He thought it was “nothing too severe” and said he would be evaluated today in Pittsburgh. Should the Pirates need to put Velasquez on the injured list, there are some options at Indianapolis. Luis Ortiz is 2-1 with a 2.45 ERA at Indy and Quinn Priester, the 2019 first round draft pick, has had a rough season so far but threw six shutout innings yesterday, striking out four. His next turn in the Indy rotation would match the next turn in the Pirates’ rotation for Velasquez.
The Pirates come home to face the tough Toronto Blue Jays as they try to break the losing streak. Lefthander Rich Hill (3-2, 4.18 ERA) pitches for the Bucs against the Jays’ righty Chris Bassitt (3-2, 5.18 ERA). It’s a 6:10 airtime, 6:35 first pitch from PNC Park on WCCS.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona scored four in the top of the fourth and got its second straight win in Richmond, topping the Flying Squirrels, 6-3. Liover Peguero had two hits and Jacob Gonzalez cracked a 2-run home run. Starter Sean Sullivan gave up three runs on four hits with three walks in four innings for the Curve and reliever Oliver Garcia got the win with two shutout one-hit innings.
Game four of the series tonight will see the Curve sending Aaron Shortridge to the mound.
