For the month of March, Indiana County’s unemployment rate dropped four-tenths of a percentage point.
The new unemployment rate for the county, according to the PA Department of Labor and Industry, fell to 4.6 percent in March. Comparing Indiana to the surrounding counties, Westmoreland has the lowest rate at 3.7 percent. After that is Jefferson county at 4.0 percent, followed by Armstrong County at 4.2 percent and Clearfield is at 4.4 percent. Cambria county is the highest in the region at 5.0 percent.
The statewide rate was at 4.2 percent while the national rate was 3.5 percent.
The seasonally adjusted labor force, made up of people working or looking for work, went up by 300 to 35,700. The total number of non-farm jobs in the area went up by 100 to 28,700 in March. Jobs went essentially unchanged over the month in the nine published industry super sectors. Over the last 12 months, the largest decline was seen in in mining, logging and construction, which went down by 400. Six other supersectors in the area held steady.
