The U.S. Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General is warning people about a scam letter that is making the rounds.
Scammers are sending out letters that closely resemble those from the Social Security Administration’s office of Inspector General or other government agencies like the Federal Trade Commission. The letters are usually mailed through the post office, or sent as an email or text via an attachment. The tactics are similar, as the scammer tries to scare the victim with an unexpected problem that has a solution that involves a hefty immediate payment, and sometimes that payment could take the form of gift cards or pre-paid cash cards.
The Social Security Administration advises people to hang up or ignore the message, secure your money and personal information, be skeptical and cautious of unexpected calls, and do not open suspicious attachments or messages. If you are a victim, notify financial institutions and safeguard accounts. They also advise you to call local law enforcement and file a report.
