The United School District is getting ready to welcome its new superintendent, and at last night’s meeting, the school board had kind words for the person who stepped up and filled the vacancy.
During a special meeting last month, the board hired Richard Lucas as the new superintendent. He comes to United from the Windber school district, where he was the acting superintendent and a principal. Board president Eric Matava said that the acting superintendent for United, Dr. Charles Koren, was a great asset as he was able to become a part of the district quickly, and jumped in during a tough time for the district.
One of the major issues Koren had to deal with was the recent issue with the theft of money from the district’s band boosters set aside for a trip to Disney World.
In other business, the board approved rehiring Matt Rodkey as the boys basketball coach, Paul Hall as the girls basketball coach and Joshua Henning as the head varsity wrestling coach. The board also approved, with regret, the resignation elementary aide Mary Jo Mytrysak and high school aide Donna Mack.
