Reaction continues to come in concerning the announcement of the closure of the Homer City Generating Station.
The plant informed PJM Interconnection last Friday of its intent to decommission all of its coal units, and operations will wind down over the next 90 days. The decision to close was based on several factors, including the recent spike in coal prices, the low price of natural gas and recent emissions limits imposed by the Federal Implementation Plan that according to a news release, “impose an excessive economic and operational burden.” Homer City Generation President and CEO William Wexler said that everyone at the plant did what they could to maintain operations.
Homer City Borough Manager Robert Nymick said that the borough has been through this before, but how it will fare with this closure is still unknown.
Homer-Center Superintendent Ralph Cecere, Jr. said that while the district will see a negative financial impact, his focus for now will be on how the district can help students affected by the closure.
The plant is one of the largest generators of tax revenue for Homer City, Center Township and the Homer-Center School District.
