Indiana borough police have been preparing for the upcoming weekend of unauthorized celebrations at IUP.
The celebrations, known as IUPatty’s, have brought people into Indiana County, and in the past, that has also brought increases in unruly behaviors. In 2014, large parties led to traffic being blocked and brawls at parties, and in 2017, there was a shooting along Oakland Avenue. Since then, there have been fewer reports of inappropriate behaviors, with the lowest coming in the early 2020’s due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl said that his department has been preparing for this weekend and anticipating an increase in activity. Schawl said that his office and law enforcement partners have been keeping a close eye on social media.
Indiana Borough Police will be assisted throughout the weekend by State Police, which includes their mounted unit; IUP Campus Police; officers with the Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement; and Blairsville Borough Police.
