Tomorrow is the start of Daylight Saving Time, and the American Red Cross is reminding people of a safety routine that should be followed when the clocks are adjusted.
The Red Cross says that when we move the clocks ahead an hour for tomorrow morning, the smoke alarms in the house should be tested to see if they need batteries replaced or if the unit needs to be replaced altogether. They also recommend that other steps can be taken to stay safe from home fires, including:
- Installing smoke alarms on every level of the house
- Replacing smoke alarms that are over 10 years old
- Practice a two-minute escape plan to make sure everyone can get out of the house in two minutes or less
- Teaching children what a smoke alarm sounds like
The Red Cross says that home fires are the nation’s most frequent disaster. For more information, you can log on to www.redcross.org/fire
