State police in Indiana is offering up some tools to help prevent the theft and illegal use of firearms.
According to a news release, troopers are offering cable gun locks and firearm safety/personal inventory cards to area residents at no cost. The gun locks meet standard requirements and are also a California Department of Justice-approved safety device. The lock comes with two keys and an instruction sheet, and is imprinted with the insignia of the state police. The locks can be obtained by calling the barracks at 724-357-1960. The locks are free.
The inventory card is being offered through a link on the State Police website. Troopers say the inventory card is a convenient way for owners to keep track of their inventory. If a firearm is stolen, the victim then has quick access to the pertinent information needed to trace the gun’s location.
In 2022, members of Troop A of the state police investigated 15 reports of stolen firearms, with a total of 39 firearms stolen. Seven were reported stolen from vehicles and 32 were reported stolen from homes and residences. Only three firearms were recovered.
