With about 20 days before his scheduled trial, a motions hearing is scheduled today for a man charged in connection with the death of an IUP student in February of 2017.
Brady DiStefano of Westmont in Cambria County will go before Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco today. The motions hearings today will focus on declaring someone as a material witness, to allow testimony to be done via Zoom Video Chat, and scheduling the trial itself. DiStefano is facing a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the death of Caleb Zweig. The two fought on February 3rd, and Zweig died at IRMC due to injuries suffered in the fight. Charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault were initially dismissed by then-President Judge William Martin, but the aggravated assault charge was reinstated on appeal to the State Superior Court. Later on, Martin ruled that the jury could not hear evidence that DiStefano’s role lead to Zweig’s death, nor could it hear testimony from a forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy. The Superior Court reversed those rulings on appeal.
Jury selection is scheduled to start on March 20th.
