The contract talks between the Penns Manor School District and the union representing its teachers have hit an impasse.
According to a statement released by the district, the Penns Manor Educators Association presented the district with a strike proposal at Saturday’s meeting and informed the negotiating committee that if the proposal was not accepted, the teachers would strike would begin on Monday. The committee contacted each member of the board and each member rejected the proposal. This comes after two days of negotiations with a state mediator present.
In statements from both the district and the union, stumbling blocks continue to be healthcare costs and the early retirement incentive.
The PMEA says that they have compromised in areas to keep negotiations going, including some health care increases and reimbursement of tuition if the teacher leaves the district within two years.
Classes will be cancelled for Penns Manor students starting on Monday and will remain cancelled until an agreement is reached and teachers return to work. The district will hold a special public informational meeting on Monday at 6:00 PM in the district’s multipurpose room at the Elementary School, which the public is encouraged to attend.
