A special session of the State House was held yesterday, with the focus being on two bills concerning victims of childhood sexual abuse.
One bill proposes an amendment to the state constitution to provide a two-year window for victims of childhood sexual abuse to sue their abusers, while the other looks to accomplish this on a legislative level. The bills had not been addressed at the state house level because the house had not been in session. There have been three special elections held for three vacant seats in the house, two of which came when Summer Lee and Austin Davis resigned their seats to serve in the U.S. Congress and as PA’s Lieutenant Governor, respectively. The third was to fill a vacancy left by the death of Tony DeLuca. After democrats won all three elections, giving the party a 102-101 majority in the state house, rules were able to be drafted to hold a special session on the passage of the two bills.
The bill proposing the amendment passed 161-40, while the other passed 134-67. State Representative Jim Struzzi voted in favor of both bills, while Representative Brian Smith voted against both bills.
