U.S. Senator John Fetterman is expected to be in the hospital for “a few weeks” as he receives treatment for clinical depression.
Earlier this week, Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of what had been initially described as a mental illness days after coming out of the hospital for dizzy spells. Reports from a senior aide say that he will continue to receive inpatient care as doctors will try different medications to see what works for Fetterman. His office has said that Fetterman has experienced depression on and off throughout his life, but it became severe over the last few weeks.
Experts with the American Stroke Association say that depression is common after stroke, adding that it could be due to chemical changes in the brain that make it difficult to feel positive emotions or a psychological response to the stress related to the event.
Meanwhile, Fetterman is receiving support from both us fellow senator Bob Casey and President Joe Biden. In a tweet earlier this week, Senator Casey said he was proud of Fetterman for getting the help he needs and “for publicly acknowledging his challenges to break down the stigma for others.” President Biden said that Fetterman was “Leading By Example” and that he was grateful for doing so.
