With the warmer and drier than normal conditions this winter comes the possibility for a spike in the number of brush fires, and two were reported yesterday to bring to a total of five brush fires over the last week.
The first of the brush fires was reported on Saltsburg Road in Conemaugh Township at 12:12 PM. Saltsburg, Tunnelton and Iselin/West Lebanon fire departments were dispatched at the time, with the Coal Run/McIntyre Volunteer Fire Department called out later on. The other fire was on Cobblestone Lane in West Wheatfield Township at 3:44 PM. Clyde, Armagh, Bolivar and New Florence fire departments were dispatched.
Details on how the fires started and how much damage was done is unavailable.
This brings the total to five brush fires this year so far.
On top of that, first responders were sent out to assist on the scene of two vehicle crashes. One was on Bowser Road in West Wheatfield Township. Clyde and Armagh fire departments, Citizens Ambulance and State Police were dispatched. No information is available on this crash as of yet.
The other crash was on South Walnut Street in Blairsville at 10:25 PM. Blairsville police and fire departments along with Black Lick Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Black Lick fire officials said that a vehicle collided with a deer, and the vehicle had caught fire. The fire was out by the time crews arrived.
