North Carolina looked like they would run Pitt of the court early, but the Panthers hung in against the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill last night, eventually taking a one-point lead into halftime and battling through the second half to prevail, 65-64. Jamarius Burton hit two free throws with 3.6 seconds left for the winning points.
Nelly Cummings was 5-of-6 from beyond the three-point line, and 8-of-11 overall, finishing with 21 points, and Burton added 19 for the Panthers. Nike Sibande also hit double figures with 10. For North Carolina, Caleb Love had 22, Armando Bacot had 15 with 11 rebounds, and Pete Nance had 11.
Coach Jeff Capel was thrilled with his team’s rugged play.
The Panthers are 6-1 this season in ACC games decided by five or fewer points. Capel says his players do not wilt when it gets tight late in games.
Pitt (16-6, 8-3) returns home to play Louisville next Tuesday.
