Late last week, the Pennsylvania Game Commission met and discussed hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits for the 2023-24 hunting year.
One of the top proposals that was discussed was the restructuring the antlerless deer allocation system. The proposal would have hunters purchase their tags online or at issuing agents beginning the fourth Monday of June instead of going through the county treasurer. This would be for residents only, with non-residents getting opportunities in July and August.
One other point that was discussed in-depth was the schedule for rifle deer season. The Commission voted to stay with the current schedule of starting the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Before 2019, rifle deer season would start the Monday after Thanksgiving. In recent months there had been a move to go back to the prior schedule, backed by legislation from State Representative Brian Smith, who represents Indiana and Jefferson Counties.
Before the vote, Commissioners reviewed license data from the past few years, and it showed an increase in hunting license sales among hunters 18 to 34 years of age and female hunters as well.
All proposals will need final approval at the committee’s next meeting, which is scheduled for April 14th and 15th.
