In a Facebook post, Fyock said someone is claiming to be him and is asking residents for gift cards or threatening to arrest them. The funds garnered from gift cards were, subsequently, sent to Nigeria.
One report said the scammer stated that a message was “from the sheriff’s office,” and that the recipient had a parcel for them to pick up, but it could not be delivered unless they paid a fee. Another message asked the recipient to pay a “winning clearance fee” of $275 to the sheriff’s office in Indiana.
Fyock advises residents to ignore the messages and block the phone number, as the Indiana County Sheriff’s Office would never demand payment for winnings or fees. If one falls victim to this type of scam, they are urged to contact their local police department.
