With the recent decline in officials across various sports, one local school district is considering an incentive to get more participation.
At their committee meeting Wednesday night, the Penns Manor School Board discussed a recommendation from the athletic committee of increasing stipends for PIAA officials, citing difficulty in obtaining officials as the main reason. Superintendent Daren Johnston said the committee brought forth some proposed amounts:
- Varsity football would raise from $65 to $70;
- Cross country would raise from $50 to $60;
- And softball and baseball would raise from $60 to $70.
Johnston said the board will consider this while negotiating the 2023-24 budget.
Citing recent turmoil from the Penns Manor Teachers Union, which authorized a strike back in November due to on-going contract negotiations, Johnston said the two are separate issues and any potential increase in stipends for officials will be minor.
The board will vote on the stipends this week during their regular voting meeting. If approved, there will be some adjusting to the aforementioned budget.
