IUP will hold a building dedication ceremony today for its humanities and social sciences building.
Today will be the dedication of the new Jane E. Leonard Hall. She was an original staffer at IUP when it was known as Indiana Normal School in 1875. Leonard served the University for 46 years, and was the preceptress of the school, and taught english literature, history and geography. She lived in an apartment in Sutton Hall up until her death in 1924.
The naming of the building in Leonard’s name was requested by Dr. Charles and Donna Cashdollar, and marks the third building on campus that was dedicated to her. The original Leonard Hall was built in 1903 but destroyed in 1952. It was rebuilt and reopened two years later in the same location in the Oak Grove, where it stood until 2017 when the building was razed to make way for the John J. and Char Kopchick College of Science and Mathematics. The building that will bear her name will house the academic departments to which she was connected in her run.
