One part of the Thanksgiving weekend tradition is the start of rifle deer season, which is today. But there may be more hunters in the woods than normal because this year, rifle deer season coincides with the extended bear season.
Indiana County’s three wildlife management units, 2C, 2D and 2E, will be active with the first day of deer season, but 2C will be especially active as it will also be the start of the extended bear season. Hunters are advised to remember to wear their orange whether bear hunting or deer hunting, as the requirements for both are the same.
Drivers are also to be aware for both humans and animals along the side of the roads. As hunters set up their hunting stands, and as hunting activity goes on, some animals may be driven out from the woods and onto roads and highways.
Rifle deer season runs today through Saturday, December 10th, with the only non-hunting day being Sunday, December 4th. Extended bear season will run through December 3rd in WMU 2C only, which includes the southeast corner of Indiana County.
We wish all our hunters out there good luck!
