The hunt for a new first baseman continued yesterday for the Pirates as they claimed Lewin Diaz off waivers from the Miami Marlins.
The 26-year-old was designated for assignment by Miami on November 15th when Rule 5-eligible prospects had to be added to the team’s 40-man roster. He hit .169 with the Marlins last season with five home runs and 11 RBIs.
Diaz potentially adds a power threat to the Bucs’ lineup, posting a max exit velocity of 112 miles per hour. He also accumulated 16 defensive runs saved in 99 innings at first base, giving the Pirates a formidable defensive option.
The Pirates designated utility man Hoy Park for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
