While there may be some relief coming in the form of rain showers from Hurricane Nicole tomorrow, conditions are still ripe now for brush fires, with more reported on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Only one brush fire was reported on Tuesday, and that was a fire reported in Clymer Borough. Clymer Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to an area off 15th Street in the borough for the fire at 4:13 PM Tuesday.
Wednesday was the active day with five brush fires reported. The first was at 1:28 PM on Grace Church Road in Cherryhill Township. Cherryhill and Clymer fire departments were dispatched at that time. Then one was reported on Gaston Road in Canoe Township that brought out six fire departments from both Indiana and Jefferson Counties including Rossiter, Glen Campbell and Marion Center fire departments and the Big Run, Punxsy Central and Lindsey fire departments at 1:29 PM. Plumville and Big Elk fire departments were called in for standby duty. Marion Center fire officials confirmed that the fire was in the area of the Embassy of Hillsdale Park personal care home. Residents were evacuated at that time.
Commodore and Cherry Tree fire departments were called out for a brush fire on Mountainview Road in Montgomery Township at 2:56 PM. Clymer and Glen Campbell fire departments were initially called in for backup, along with the Hope, Marion Center and Plumville fire departments later on. Brush Valley and Armagh-East Wheatfield fire departments were dispatched at 4:44 PM for a fire along Route 56 East in Brush Valley Township.
The final brush fire reported yesterday was along Clarksburg Road in Conemaugh Township at 10:41 PM. Tunnelton and Saltsburg fire departments were dispatched at the time. Blairsville, Coal Run-McIntyre and Iselin-West Lebanon fire departments were dispatched later on to assist at the scene.
This now brings the total of brush fires this year to 67.
