The president of the faculty union at the State System, of Higher Education universities last week warned the Board of Governors against further cuts in liberal arts studies at the state-owned schools.
Speaking at the quarterly Board meeting, APSCUF’s Dr. Kenneth Mash said a quality university education cannot be only about vocational training, but must include the arts. In his words, “Because cutting in this area can be the path of least resistance, when it comes to difficult times, we have to be on guard against cutting the liberal arts.”
Mash told the board that the State System, “cannot continue to cut into these courses, programs, and minors without being unfaithful to the very purpose of (the) System.” He said that while “the needs of the Commonwealth and the workforce” merit attention, the System must remember “the importance of the liberal arts.”
