The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection recently announced that $3 million in grant funding will go towards the restoration and health of local watersheds to local governments, and Indiana County is set to receive a portion of those funds.
According to a news release, the DEP is set to allocate $322,920 to the Indiana County Conservation District to design and construct and animal heavy use area and manure storage facility at a farm in East Mahoning Township at the headwaters of South Branch Plum Creek.
The constructions will provide a stabilized area for livestock to congregate in winter months and prevent soil erosion, as well as nutrient runoff. In addition, about 450 pounds of nitrogen and 62 pounds of phosphorus will be removed from the creek.
More details can be found in the South Branch Plum Creek Watershed Implementation Plan. That can be found here.
The project is said to impact 42 watersheds across the state.
