State police say the driver of a Mack dump truck which plummeted off a Route 119 Bypass bridge onto Wayne Avenue below has died. The 57-year-old man from Marion Center, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was taken by ambulance to the Indiana Regional Medical Center and later flown to Allegheny General Hospital, where he passed away.
The accident happened shortly after 4:30 AM when the southbound truck, which was unloaded, exited the elevated highway and traveled into the median, striking a guardrail and then an embankment. It then went airborne and went through the overpass, striking a concrete barrier below on the Wayne Avenue ramp. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck.
The Wayne Avenue ramp on Route 119 remains closed at this hour. PennDOT says repairs to the roadway are underway and they estimate it will reopen at around 6 PM.
The State Police Troop A Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, and Forensic Services Unit are conducting the investigation.
