Governor Tom Wolf has not yet announced plans for the replacement of Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Max Baer, who died unexpectedly Friday night at the age of 74. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Baer was scheduled to retire at the end of this year after turning 75 years old, the mandatory retirement age for judges in Pennsylvania. His seat on the high court will not be on the ballot until next year, and the governor had been expected to name a replacement, with Senate confirmation after that. The process may be expedited with only a few legislative days left on the calendar this year.
The new justice will not be the Chief Justice. As the longest tenured member of the court, Debra Todd will become the new Chief Justice.
