Tributes continue to pour in for Gilbert “Gib” Zilner, the co-founder of Diamond Drug and Diamond Medical Supply who passed away over the weekend.
Former State Senator Don White remembered Zilner as a close personal friend who was always an outgoing person in Indiana County.
One part of how Diamond grew over the years under the leadership of Gib and his wife Joan was becoming the largest pharmacy provider to correctional institutions in the United States. Sheriff Bob Fyock commented that Gib was also a big supporter of getting drugs out of the hands of potential addicts through the drug take back program.
The Zilners bought Diamond Drug in 1970 and grew it to include the medical supply business, a retail mail-order company, an FDA certified drug repacking business and a healthcare software company. Gib was also remembered for his contributions to Indiana County, including taking over the Angels Wings program, and his work with the Indiana County Airport Authority, and two terms as board president of Aging Services, Inc. And just this year, Diamond Drugs was named “Best Place to Work” in the Best of Indiana County awards.
One of Zilner’s longtime friends was Joe Renosky, who used to go big game hunting and fishing with him for many years across the United States and Canada, and helped him in the field when cancer made things difficult. He recounted how mentally tough Zilner was, even during his cancer treatments.
