Pennsylvania State police have released the statistics for their Labor Day enforcement efforts.
Troopers say that they investigated 648 crashes over the four-day driving period, which ran from September 2nd to the 5th. Six people were killed in six of those crashes, and police say alcohol was a factor in four out of the six crashes. A total of 180 people were injured and 45 of the 648 total crashes were alcohol-related.
Troopers also arrested 515 people across the state for driving under the influence. Police also issued more than 22,000 citations, including 8,105 speeding tickets, 799 seat belt citations and 177 child safety seat citations. Last year, Pennsylvania had six people die in crashes over the Labor Day weekend, and another 209 were injured in 674 crashes that were investigated by state troopers.
State Police in Troop A, which covers large parts of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties and all of Cambria and Somerset Counties, saw no fatalities over the four-day weekend, but seven people were injured in 32 crashes. Four of those crashes were alcohol-related. Police in Troop A also arrested 45 people for driving under the influence, issued 574 speeding tickets, 60 seat belt citations and 778 other citations for a total of more than 1,400 total tickets issued.
Breaking the statistics down even further, State Police from the Indiana Barracks arrested 13 people for Driving Under the Influence, with nine of those DUI cases being drug-related and the others were alcohol related. Police made 391 traffic stops, investigated eight crashes and issued 426 citations. Of the citations, 240 of them were for speeding and seven were for seat belt violations.
