September brings with it an electricity rate increase for customers of Penelec and four other suppliers across the commonwealth.
Penelec customers will see their rates rise by 18.7 percent, from 8.443 cents per kilowatt hour to 10.021 cents. That’s the second largest increase among the five suppliers. Penn Power’s rates go up 19 percent; Metropolitan Edison’s rates increase by 18.4 percent; PECO customers will see an 11.4 percent increase; and West Penn Power’s rates will rise 1.3 percent.
For Penelec, it will be the second straight quarter with an increase in the “price to compare”, which reflects the cost of the electricity supplied to the utility. That makes up about 40 to 60 percent of the bill. The other charge is for distribution, which covers the operation and maintenance of infrastructure. Penelec’s customers saw an increase of 35.4 percent in June.
