State Police conducted a two-night campaign to crack down on people driving under the influence, and it netted nearly 500 DUI arrests across the state.
According to a news release, state police commemorated the 20th anniversary of Operation Nighthawk with a two-night DUI detail across the state, with police this year arresting 492 people on DUI charges. Among those arrests, 94 of them were for driving while their license was suspended for DUI. While the main focus was to get drunk and intoxicated drivers off the street, police also issued 2,219 citations and 4,051 warnings, and made 279 other criminal arrests and served 89 warrants.
In 2002, State Police from the Wyoming Barracks in Luzerne County conducted the first Operation Nighthawk, which received several national accolades and has served as a model for other programs in other states. For the 20th anniversary of that success, State Police conducted an Operation Nighthawk patrol in each troop district. For Troop A, which serves portions of Indiana and Westmoreland counties along with all of Cambria and Somerset counties, Police made 25 DUI arrests, five for driving on a suspended DUI license, issued 106 citations, 224 warnings, made 19 other criminal arrests and served two warrants. It was not announced where in Troop A the detail took place.
