After weeks of waiting, the Penguins announced this afternoon that they have re-signed defenseman Kris Letang to a six-year deal.
The team announced the signing in a tweet calling Tanger “a Penguin for life,” and general manager Ron Hextall shared that sentiment, saying Letang “epitomizes what it means to be a Pittsburgh Penguin,” and that “the role he plays on this team is irreplaceable.”
Letang won three Stanley Cup championships with the Penguins – 2009, 2016, and 2017 – and is leads every significant team record for a defenseman, holding the crown for games played (941), goals (144), assists (506), and points (650). He’s also excelled during the playoffs, playing in 149 games, netting 23 postseason goals and 90 playoff points.
The deal is worth a total of $36.6 million with an average annual value of $6.1 million. It comes just hours before the 2022 NHL Draft.
