The Pirates suffered another embarrassing loss last night as the Yankees bombed the Bucs at PNC Park.
Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Yankees have a lot of weapons.
Newly-acquired reliever Manny Banuelos, who came from the Yankees, made his Pirates debut and gave up five runs in a third-of-an-inning. Infielder Josh VanMeter threw the ninth for the Bucs and gave up six runs. Shelton says VanMeter helped him save arms for today’s doubleheader in Cincinnati.
In his weekly injury update, Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said left-hander Dillon Peters appears ready to come back after two relief appearances with Altoona and one with Indianapolis. Infielder Kevin Newman is very close as well, with “no issues with his lower half after suffering groin and then hamstring injuries. Newman was 1-for-4 in an Indianapolis loss last night. Outfielder Jake Marisnick also has had no issues with his rehabbing thumb. He was 0-for-2 in the same Indy game.
Tomczyk also had updates on two Altoona players who both appear to be far from coming back. Second baseman Nick Gonzales will wear a walking boot for the next five to seven days and outfielder Matt Gorski has been transferred to the 60-day injury list with a quad injury, but does not appear to be in need of surgery. Gorski leads the Pittsburgh organization in home runs with 23 between Greensboro and Altoona.
