The off-duty police officer who was shot to death Sunday night in Allegheny County, graduated from the IUP Police Academy in May.
23-year-old Charles G. Stipetich served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a member of the Oakdale Police Department.
40-year-old Kevin McSwiggen of Pittsburgh is charged with criminal homicide and two counts of recklessly endangering another person. He told police that Stipetich cut him off while driving on Route 28. Video from a camera mounted in his pickup truck shows the enraged McSwiggen following Stipetich, and the two fighting after Stipetich went to his father’s home, with the father stepping between them. The younger Stipetich was shot and McSwiggen then turned his gun toward the elder, but the wounded younger man shot McSwiggen first.
Stipetich was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he died. Police took McSwiggen to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was placed under guard while being treated for his wounds.
Stipetich enrolled at the IUP Police Academy in December and started work as a police officer in Oakdale only eight days before he was killed.
