Indiana County’s unemployment rate took a sharp drop in the month of May.
According to the State Department of Labor and Industry, the May seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, a drop of four-tenths of a percentage point. This came after the unemployment rate went up in the month of April. Meanwhile, the statewide unemployment rate went down by two-tenths of a point over the same month to 4.6 percent. The national unemployment rate remained unchanged from April at 3.6 percent.
Total non-farm jobs in Indiana County were down 900 over the month to 28,300 in May. Jobs in eight of the nine super-sectors were essentially unchanged over the month. The only significant movement was in the government sector where there was a drop of 800 jobs. That drop was anticipated as the semester came to an end at IUP. Over the last year, jobs were essentially unchanged in seven of the nine super-sectors.
